Using Message Reactions in Group Chat

Updated yesterday

Overview

Message reactions let you quickly respond to messages in Group Chat without typing a reply. React with a thumbs up, heart, laughing face, fire, or checkmark to acknowledge messages, show agreement, or express excitement.

How to React to a Message

  1. Hover over (or tap on mobile) any message in the Group Chat

  2. A reaction bar appears with the 5 reaction icons

  3. Click the reaction you want to add

  4. Your reaction appears below the message with a count

Reaction Details

  • Multiple reactions: You can add multiple different reactions to the same message

  • One per type: You can only add each reaction type once per message (clicking again removes it)

  • Reaction counts: Each reaction shows a number indicating how many people reacted with that emoji

  • Remove a reaction: Click the same reaction again to remove yours

  • Everyone can see reactions: All group members can see who reacted (hover over the count to see names)

When to Use Reactions

Reactions are perfect for:

  • Acknowledging announcements without cluttering the chat with "OK" messages

  • Voting informally β€” "Give a πŸ‘ if you're interested in the sunset cruise"

  • Showing enthusiasm β€” πŸ”₯ for exciting trip updates

  • Confirming you've read something β€” βœ… for important instructions

  • Keeping chat clean β€” one reaction replaces dozens of "sounds good" messages

Tips

  • Reactions help reduce chat noise β€” instead of 20 people typing "great!", a quick πŸ‘ or ❀️ gets the point across

  • Organizers can use reactions as a quick informal poll β€” "React with πŸ”₯ if you want to do the snorkeling excursion"

  • Reactions work on all message types including text messages and announcements

Troubleshooting

Problem

Solution

Reaction bar not appearing on hover

Refresh the chat page and try again. On mobile, tap and hold the message instead of hovering. Ensure you are logged in and have joined the Group Chat.

My reaction disappeared

You may have accidentally clicked the reaction again, which removes it. Click the reaction icon once more to re-add it.

Cannot see who reacted to a message

Hover over (or tap) the reaction count badge below the message. A tooltip shows the names of everyone who added that reaction.

Reactions not updating in real time

Check your internet connection. Reactions use real-time updates, so a slow or disconnected network can delay the display. Refresh the page to sync.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I react to my own messages in Group Chat? A: Yes. You can add reactions to any message in the Group Chat, including your own. This can be useful for organizers who want to mark their own announcements with a checkmark to indicate the information is confirmed.

Q: Is there a limit to how many people can react to a single message? A: No. Every member of the Group Chat can react to any message, and the reaction count updates in real time. Whether your group has 5 or 500 travelers, everyone can add their reaction.

Q: Do reactions send notifications to the message author? A: No. Reactions are a lightweight, non-intrusive way to respond. The message author can see reaction counts on their message, but they do not receive a separate push notification or email for each reaction added.

Q: Can I add a custom emoji reaction that is not in the default set? A: No. Group Chat currently supports five fixed reaction types: thumbs up, heart, laugh, fire, and checkmark. These cover the most common responses and keep the chat experience simple and consistent for all users.
