How to Enable Buy Now Pay Later for Your Trips

Updated yesterday

Overview

Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) allows your travelers to pay for their trip using Klarna, Affirm, or Afterpay — giving them flexible financing options at checkout. As an organizer, you can enable or disable each BNPL provider individually.

Requirements

Before enabling BNPL, be aware of these requirements:

  • Stripe must be your payment gateway — BNPL is not available with Square

  • Currency support varies by provider:

    • Klarna — Supports USD, EUR, GBP, and other local currencies (24+ European countries)

    • Affirm — USD and CAD only ($50 minimum)

    • Afterpay/Clearpay — USD, CAD, GBP, AUD, NZD (domestic transactions only)

  • "Pay in Full" only — BNPL is only available when the traveler selects the "Pay in Full" payment option. It does not work with SquadTrip installment plans (since the BNPL provider handles the installments instead)

  • A 4% convenience fee is added to the traveler's total when they choose a BNPL option

  • Availability also depends on your Stripe account's active capabilities — some providers may need to be activated in your Stripe dashboard

How to Enable BNPL

  1. Log in to your organizer dashboard

  2. Open your trip and click "Payments" in the left sidebar (Main Flow menu)

  3. Expand the "Payments Options" section

  4. You'll see toggle switches for each provider:

    • Klarna — Popular in the US and Europe, supports multiple currencies

    • Affirm — US and Canada, USD/CAD only

    • Afterpay — Pay in 4 installments over 6 weeks

  5. Toggle on the providers you want to offer — each toggle saves automatically with a confirmation message

How It Works for Travelers

When BNPL is enabled and a traveler selects "Pay in Full" at checkout:

  1. The BNPL options appear as payment methods alongside credit card

  2. The traveler selects their preferred provider (Klarna, Affirm, or Afterpay)

  3. A 4% convenience fee is displayed and added to their total

  4. They're redirected to the BNPL provider to complete their application

  5. If approved, the BNPL provider pays you the full amount upfront

  6. The traveler repays the BNPL provider according to their plan

The 4% convenience fee is clearly displayed to the traveler before they confirm payment, so there are no surprises.

When BNPL Won't Appear

BNPL options are automatically hidden from travelers when:

  • The traveler selects an installment plan instead of "Pay in Full"

  • Square is the active payment gateway (Stripe required)

  • You haven't enabled any BNPL providers in your settings

  • The trip currency is not supported by the specific BNPL provider (e.g., Affirm only supports USD/CAD)

Tips for Organizers

  • Enabling BNPL can increase conversions — travelers who can't pay the full amount upfront may still book using flexible financing

  • You get paid in full immediately — the BNPL provider assumes the financing risk, not you

  • The 4% fee is transparent — travelers see the fee before confirming, reducing disputes

  • Consider mentioning BNPL availability in your trip description to attract more bookings

Disabling BNPL

To turn off BNPL options:

  1. Go to Payments in the left sidebar

  2. Expand the "Payments Options" section

  3. Toggle off the BNPL providers you want to disable — changes save automatically

Travelers who already completed a BNPL payment will continue their repayment plan with the provider — disabling BNPL only affects future checkouts.
