Why Can't I Enable Payment Methods on My Trip?

Learn why you may get an error when trying to enable payment options.

Updated this week

Overview

If you can't toggle payment methods (Apple Pay, Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay) in your Trip Builder, it's because no payment gateway is connected yet. You must connect Stripe before you can enable payment methods. BNPL and Apple Pay require Stripe specifically. This article explains the requirements for each payment method and how to resolve the issue.

Why Your Toggles Are Disabled

Payment method toggles in the Payments & Refunds tab require an active payment gateway connection. Without one, a "Connect Payment Gateway" modal appears prompting you to connect Stripe or Square.

All BNPL methods (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay) and Apple Pay are Stripe-only features. If you only have Square connected, these options will not be available.

How to Fix It

Step 1: Connect a Payment Gateway

  1. In your Trip Builder, look for the "Connect Payment Gateway" prompt

  2. Connect Stripe (enables all payment methods including BNPL and Apple Pay). Square is only available as a fallback if Stripe has restricted or rejected your account.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the connection

  4. Return to Payments & Refunds in your Trip Builder

Step 2: Enable Payment Methods

  1. Go to the "Payments Options" section in Payments & Refunds

  2. The status line shows "Currently ON: [list]"

  3. Toggle on the payment methods you want to offer

  4. Toggles save automatically -- no Save button needed

After connecting Stripe, all methods are enabled by default (Apple Pay, Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay). You can toggle off any you don't want.

Important Notes

  • Either Stripe or Square is required before publishing a trip -- you cannot accept payments without a connected gateway

  • Payment method toggles save automatically -- there's no separate Save button

  • You connect one gateway at a time -- Stripe or Square, not both. Square is a fallback if Stripe restricts your account

  • BNPL is a third checkout option outside of Pay in Full and Installments

  • Disconnecting your payment gateway removes all payment options for future bookings unless another gateway is connected; existing bookings are unaffected

  • The 6% processing fee applies regardless of which payment method or gateway is used

Troubleshooting

Problem

Solution

Toggles are grayed out

No payment gateway is connected. Connect Stripe or Square first.

Connected Square but can't enable Klarna/Affirm/Afterpay

BNPL methods require Stripe, not Square. Connect Stripe to enable these options.

Connected Square but no Apple Pay option

Apple Pay requires Stripe. Connect Stripe to offer Apple Pay at checkout.

Stripe is connected but toggles still disabled

Check your Stripe account status. If Stripe has restricted or is reviewing your account, payment methods may be temporarily disabled.

Want to offer both card and BNPL

Connect Stripe. Stripe supports all payment methods including card, Apple Pay, and BNPL.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a business to connect Stripe? A: No. Individuals can connect Stripe using their personal information. You do not need an EIN, LLC, or registered business. Stripe may ask for identity verification (ID and last 4 of SSN), but this is for fraud prevention, not a business requirement.

Q: Can I use both Stripe and Square at the same time? A: No. You connect one payment gateway at a time. Stripe is the primary gateway and supports all payment methods (cards, Apple Pay, BNPL). Square is available as a fallback if Stripe has restricted or rejected your account, but Square only supports card payments -- no BNPL or Apple Pay.

Q: Why can't I use Apple Pay with Square? A: Apple Pay on SquadTrip is integrated through Stripe's payment API. Square's integration does not include Apple Pay. To offer Apple Pay, connect a Stripe account.

Q: After connecting Stripe, which payment methods are on by default? A: All methods -- Apple Pay, Klarna, Affirm, and Afterpay -- are enabled by default after connecting Stripe. You can toggle off any you don't want in the Payments Options section. Toggles save automatically.
