How to Change Your Payment Settings

How to Enable or Disable Payment settings on Your Trip

Updated today

Overview

SquadTrip gives organizers full control over how guest payments are collected, including auto-charging, failed payment retries, and traveler self-service options. You can also connect your payment gateway -- Stripe or Square -- from the same settings page. All settings are toggle-based and take effect immediately.

Connecting a Payment Gateway

Before publishing your trip, you need to connect at least one payment gateway:

  • Stripe (primary) -- Supports all payment methods including BNPL (Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm) and Apple Pay. Click "Connect to Stripe" and follow the setup wizard.

  • Square (fallback) -- Available as an alternative if Stripe has restricted or rejected your account. Supports card payments only. Click "Connect to Square" to link your Square account.

You connect one gateway at a time -- either Stripe or Square, not both simultaneously. Stripe is the primary gateway and is required before publishing.

You can view your connection status on the Payments page -- connected gateways show a green status indicator.

Settings toggles are not saving

Check your internet connection and refresh the page. If the issue persists, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser.

Auto-charge is on but travelers are not being charged

Verify that the traveler has a valid card on file and that the payment due date has arrived. Check the traveler's payment history in Trip Data for failed charge attempts.

Travelers cannot reschedule their payments

Confirm the "Let travelers reschedule payments" toggle is set to ON. If it is already on, ask the traveler to log out and back in, then retry from their dashboard.

Payment gateway shows "Not Connected"

Click the Connect button for the gateway you want and complete the authorization flow. If Stripe connect fails, ensure your Stripe account is fully verified with no pending requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need both Stripe and Square to accept payments? A: No. You connect one gateway at a time -- either Stripe or Square. Most organizers use Stripe since it supports all payment methods including BNPL. Square is available as a fallback if Stripe has restricted or rejected your account, but only supports card payments.

Q: What happens if a traveler's auto-charge fails and retry is turned off? A: The traveler will receive an email notification about the failed payment and will need to log in to their dashboard to manually retry or update their card. The organizer can also see failed payments in Trip Data.

Q: Can I change payment settings after travelers have already booked? A: Yes. Toggling settings affects future payment behavior only. For example, turning off auto-charge will stop future scheduled charges but will not reverse any payments already processed.

Q: Is there a fee for using the auto-charge or retry features? A: No. All payment settings -- including auto-charge, retry, rescheduling, and card updates -- are free for organizers. The standard 6% processing fee applies to transactions regardless of which settings are enabled.

Q: What is the difference between Stripe and Square? A: Stripe is the primary gateway and supports all payment methods including cards, Apple Pay, and BNPL providers (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay). Square supports card payments only -- no BNPL or Apple Pay. You connect one gateway at a time. Square is available as a fallback if Stripe restricts your account.
